Every year the World Championship Billfish Tournament is held in different locations. For the year this logo design was used (2008), the tournament was held in Cabo San Lucas. It only made sense that the logo reflect the location within the design. With this in mind, the famous rock formations off the coast of Cabo were the main focal point of the composition. The client also requested that both a marlin and a swordfish be included, so they were created and used to frame the rocks and ocean setting. Generally, when designing a logo, the first version is created in black and white for various lower budget usage, such as advertising in newsprint at smaller sizes. Due to the client’s budget, there was no reason to approach the design in the traditional manner, so rather I jumped directly into developing a strong, highly detailed, photorealistic piece instead. The design was still going to be used in a variety of marketing materials for the tournament, so creating the layout as a vector-based graphic allowed for usage at various sizes.
